My interest in postpartum care was sparked within me at a young age, as I watched my mother birth all 5 of my siblings at home over the span of my childhood. My youngest sibling was born when I was 15 and I remember wondering “what more can I do to help Mama recover after such an experience?” All I knew to do was give her food, tea and some time alone to rest. That was good, but part of me knew that there had to be more to offer a postpartum mother than the cup of tea I held in my hands.
6 years later, I was pregnant with my own baby and eager to get my hands on any information I could. I came across a blog post about preparing for postpartum recovery and was led to a wonderful online workshop that provided me with information on how to prepare some basic herbal blends to support my recovery after birth. I was so grateful and quickly made my way to the nearest herbal store, an hour away.
I delighted in the process of making balms and teas and after birth I truly benefited from everything that I made. I enjoyed it so much that I started learning more - reading, signing up for trainings and certifications. I absorbed as much information on traditional postpartum healing practices and how nature - especially herbs - can nourish the postpartum mother.
I began gifting the products that I made to other moms and through their encouragement, I felt the invitation to begin offering my products to other mothers online.
I came up with the name Ummul Postpartum Apothecary as a dedication to my mother who is from Somalia. In the Somali language, Ummul is the word used to describe a woman who has just given birth and whom deserves to be honored, nurtured and cared for.
Now it has been almost 8 years and I pray that my small gesture of love to mothers, through my handcrafted herbal products, creates a shift… A shift towards joy in each mother as she feels what it is like to be nourished by Earth’s gifts. And a shift towards harmony in homes and in communities as mothers feel their sense of vitality come alive.
“I got this for my iron levels but it ended up helping so much more than that. I felt relief from anxiety, fatigue, and cravings. I was shocked. I would buy again and again.”
